ESPN Anchor Goes On Vulgar Anti-Jesus Rant at Celebrity Roast
In the past few decades, as political correctness has taken hold of virtually every industry, folks involved in sports and sportscasting that have made racist or sexist remarks on camera have typically been fired or forced to make public apologies. Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder's termination by CBS back in 1988 is a fine example, with the recent two-week suspension of Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman being another. Yet, given what happened on an Atlantic City dais on January 11, where a high-profile ESPN anchor went on an alcohol-induced tirade which included a vulgar reference to Jesus Christ, it appears public antitheism is not politically incorrect. After all, until this moment, you probably hadn't heard about this incident, and the person involved apparently has not been publicly admonished for her behavior by her employer.
Charlie Wilson's War
All the Pretty Horses" and "The House of Mirth" in 2000, etc. Granted, looking back over the award's match-up with Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, the safe bet is usually to expect the frontrunners to pop up, but there's a wide swath to pick from this year. Sasha is going with "Atonement," "Charlie Wilson's War," "Into the Wild," "No Country for Old Men," and "There Will Be Blood." Of course, as Stone points out, the Scripter honors both the screenwriters and the originalauthors of the source material, so it's really hard to expect Ian McEwan, Cormac McCarthy and Upton Sinclair missing from the mix. I'm not as sold on George Crile and even Jon Krakauer, but it's certainly likely we'll see these scripts show up here and with Oscar. Still, "The Kite Runner" was such a global hit when it landed on bookshelves and Dennis Lehane ("Gone Baby Gone") is such a celebrated author. And given the "Bourne" entry in '04, who's to say Tony Gilroy can't slide in yet again for what has widely been considered the best offering in the trilogy? It's all speculation for now, so we'll have to wait and see. But the USC Scripter kicks off 2008's continuance of the Oscar season tomorrow, so stay tuned...
Clinton needs big win to cut into Obama's delegate lead
As much as Hillary Clinton wants to win Ohio on Tuesday, a two-percentage point win won't do her much good in the delegate count. Under the complex mathematical formula the Ohio Democratic Party will use Tuesday to divvy up the 141 delegates at stake in Tuesday's Ohio primary, a candidate has to win big -- really big -- to win the lion's share of the delegates. .
TOWN OF NIAGARA: Puzzled by plaza plans
Town of Niagara residents will have their first chance Tuesday to ask questions about a 146,000-square-foot shopping plaza proposed for Military Road. The plaza, which will be anchored by a yet-to-be-announced national retailer, will be located on property owned by Benderson Development Co. across from the Fashion Outlets mall. Town board members will consider a request to rezone a portion of the land needed to move the project forward at their meeting Tuesday, but not before a public hearing is held. The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. inside Town Hall, 7105 Lockport Road.Supervisor Steven Richards said he's received a few calls from concerned residents since plans for the proposed "Military Place" plaza were unveiled by Benderson last month. However, he doesn't think there will be as much opposition as there's been for the Super Wal-Mart going in down the road. That project was been delayed for more than two years because of legal action brought forth by a group of residents concerned the store would have a negative and hazardous impact to the area."I think most of the residents' concerns (about Military Place) can be worked out," Richards said.
Andy Pettitte apologizes for using HGH
Moreover, Clemens has filed a defamation lawsuit against McNamee. "This has been a horrible situation for me," Pettitte said. "I'm hoping and praying I don't have to do anything else." "If that were to all die down, I think it would pretty much go away," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But obviously, there is some litigation there that Andy might be a part of. "So from that standpoint, it could linger. But my thought is Andy has probably told everything that there is." Pettitte posted a 15-9 record with a 4.05 earned-run average in 34 starts and two relief appearances last season, his 10th in New York. The left-hander is 201-113 lifetime with a 3.83 ERA and 25 complete games in 403 appearances (393 starts) over 13 MLB seasons with the Yankees and Astros.
